Raag Kirwani is a popular Raag that has been used as the basis for many Bollywood songs. The equivalent scale in Western music is commonly known as the Harmonic Minor scale.

The intervals in this scale after the Tonic note are Major 2nd, Minor 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th, Minor 6th and Major 7th.  The Swars are Sa, Re, ga, ma, Pa, dha, Ni – all Shuddh except ga and dha.

Songs bases on this Raag usually have a strong presence of 3 chords - minor chords on the Tonic and 4th, and a major or dominant 7th on the 5th. For instance, if your Tonic is A, the notes in the scale will be A, B, C, D, E, F, G#, and the most commonly used chords would be Am, Dm and E7 (or E). Most popular songs will often bring in G chord as well, while switching to the Aeolian or Natural Minor Scale.
