Raag Khamaj and several others in the family of Khamaj Thaat have influenced several Bollywood songs. The equivalent scale in Western music is the Mixolydian scale.

The intervals in this scale after the Tonic note are Major 2nd, Major 3rd, Perfect 4th, Perfect 5th, Major 6th and Minor 7th. The Swars are Sa, Re, Ga, ma, Pa, Dha, ni – all Shuddh except ni.

The most common set of chords for songs based on this family are I Major, IV Major and bVII Major. So if your Tonic or Sa is A, the scale will have the notes A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G and the you can use A Major (A, C#, E), D Major (D, F#, A) and G Major (G, B, D) to cover the entire song.

The songs Tere Mere Milan Ki, Kuchh To Log, and Mitwa are considered to be based on Khamaj Raag, and are included in the playlist below.

The songs Ghungroo Ki Tarah and Teri Ankhon Mein are supposed to be based on Raag Jhinjhoti which also uses the same scale and similar chord progressions. Other popular songs also use this scale. Click here for links to more songs in Mixolydian scale.
